Two countries, two continents... Am I Canadian or am I dutch?
Canada is so big I can't even imagine what I haven't seen yet. Yet growing up in Nelson meant growing up in the tiniest town in the middle of nowhere, with the forest and the mountains at your fingertips. A country so big sometimes feels small, until you find a bridge than connects you to a new world.
The bridge to a new world led me back to my "roots", to the Netherlands, a tiny country with no forest and no mountains at your fingertips but with so many open doors to new cultures and new experiences just a few fingertips away.
In the past when people used to ask me where I was from it would depend on the situation and the country I was in. If I was in Canada I would be proud to say I'm dutch, if I was in Europe I would be proud to say that I grew up in Canada...
Now it's official that I'm having an identity crisis, I don't know where I'm from and I don't know where I'm going. But I do know one thing, now that I can officially call myself both Canadian and dutch maybe it finally makes sense! It's not that I feel proud to be one or the other, but that I can be both. I will always feel Canadian and Dutch, like when you mix maple syrup and Gouda together it might be funky at first but later it'll turn out to be the best mixture ever.
So thank you oh Canada for allowing me to make this mixture, it's an honour to finally be able to call myself a Canadian.
Misschien leuk!?
