Last night we had such a promotion night at our school
“What do you want to do when you’re older?” The most common question asked by adults to young adults. Does or did anyone know exactly what they wanted to when they get older, possibly spending the rest of their lives based on a decision made in high school. In high school you start with a grad plan, a very broad but starting to get more and more specialised by the end of grade 12. These are some of the ways you can go, fine arts, trades recreation, sciences and liberal arts, very different ways to go. Universities and colleges prey on this insecurity and come to lots of high schools to promote themselves.
Last night we had such a promotion night at our school. We walk in and as expected there are all sorts of different universities promoting themselves to the students. Ask someone who does not know what they are planning on doing after high school, what do you do? You explore. Behind every table from a college or university can be an enthusiastic young person that can tell you all about how great they are but look like they would like to be doing anything else at the moment.
Millions of brochures paper and pens you can have, really exciting stuff. Many people say that college is a great idea to get ready and secure and transition into a university later on but personally I think its a waste of time and money. Not to be negative about the colleges but after high school you’re going to make big changes anyways and you can directly get a degree. More value for money if you have good marks.
One of these big decisions is, where are you going to go, what are you going to do? A very important concept came from these questions, wherever you’re going to go, a fabulous university that has every thing you need, but what you are going to do matters. Its important not to get stuck by doing something too specific where either you don’t like it anymore or its too expensive to get there. Something that leads to other ideas, where you have flexibility and choice to try different things but in the same general area is key to a good start for me. (I do not know what I want!)
So when they come back next year do to the same thing, ill be there to take all the free pens and coffee mugs
Misschien leuk!?
